Europe cannot afford to let its
political differences hamper moves towards greater co-operation in
scientific reasearch, a senior Brussels figure has warned.
In a keynote speech given to scientists and journalists at the
second in a series of media briefings on European Research
Infrastructures, Janez Potocnik, the European Commissioner for
Science and Research, warned that as things stand China will be
spending more on research and development than the whole of the EU
combined within five years. He said only by building a
knowledge-based economy will Europe be able to compete in a rapidly
changing global market.
