 Synopsis

Hydrogen Fuel of the FutureHydrogen is likely to be the fuel of the future – though it's a technology with a past.

Engineers at the UK's University of Birmingham are urgently working towards an alternative to the fossil fuels we have come to rely on - and the answer is most likely to be hydrogen.

Hydrogen stores a lot of energy, and has long been used as a natural fuel for space craft. Now it's being seen as the fuel to drive our cars and economy into the future.

Experts estimate that as early as the year 2010 we may need viable alternatives to traditional fuel sources. Environmental concerns and a finite supply means the days of fossil fuels are numbered.

Hydrogen is considered a clean fuel that has a minimum impact on the environment nearly eliminating the levels of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions.  It is safe to manufacture, reliable and environmentally friendly.
