Professor Dimmock explains that Influenza A viruses are really viruses of wild birds, particularly shore birds where they rarely cause illness. The danger arises when these move to domestic birds (different species) and it causes disease.

Professor Dimmock explains that because influenza virus changes, vaccines are usually only effective for a year. He explains that "protecting virus" works instead at the heart of the virus and thus, they think, works against any influenza virus, unlike vaccines.
